The 550 Maranello was quite a departure from the mid-engine 512 it replaced. Luca di Montezemolo, President of Ferrari at the time, decided he wanted Ferrari GT cars to go back to the traditional front-engine grand touring layout that was incorporated in cars like the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Thus, the 550 was born. All 550 Maranellos came with a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated dual overhead cam V8 engine that produced 485 horsepower. The 550's performance was incredible for its time and remains impressive today. 0-60 mph in around 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph. All 550 Maranellos came with a 6-speed manual transmission. This differentiates it from its replacement, the 575M, which was available with either an F1 transmission or a manual transmission. Pininfarina designed both the exterior and interior of the 550. Only slightly more than 3,000 550 Maranellos were produced during its production cycle, making it a relatively rare car. In 2004, the famed British car magazine, EVO, conducted a "Greatest Drivers" Car showdown with the greatest cars from the previous ten years. The 550 Maranello won the showdown against some stiff competition. EVO said the following regarding the 550: "As with all great cars, there's no one facet that dominates the experience. Yes, the engine is mighty, but the chassis is its equal. There's never been a supercar that's so exploitable and so rounded in its abilities." The 550's relatively low production number, along with its only being offered with a manual transmission, and its exemplary performance make it a great buy.
